7 CRAFT-BEER TRENDS IN 2021
DESPITE THE TROUBLING 2020 MARKED BY A STRONG ECONOMIC DOWNTURN FOR BREWERIES AND BARS AROUND THE WORLD, THE CRAFT BEER SCENE IS RISING FROM THE ASHES. TALENTED BREWERS AND CREATIVE BRANDS ARE STILL INNOVATING BECAUSE, MORE THAN EVER BEFORE, PEOPLE ARE EAGER TO HAVE A COLD ONE LIKE IN THE GOOD OL’ DAYS.
HERE ARE 2021 CRAFT BEER TRENDS THAT WILL BRING CLARITY TO THE INDUSTRY’S BRIGHT FUTURE. WE HOPE YOU’RE READY FOR SOME GOOD BEER; WE DESERVE IT, RIGHT?
1. LESS BEER ON TAP, MEANS FEWER OPTIONS
According to the Brewers Association, on-premise beer sales, that declined as the global pandemic intensified, will probably continue to be low. As long as bars remain closed or limited, there’s no need for much beer on tap.
Beer kegs have always encouraged brewers’ creativity, as it’s the perfect means for limited edition and seasonal brews. We won’t have many of them in 2021. Most beer sales will be channeled through retail. You can’t win them all, right?
2. FEWER BEER, BUT BETTER BEER
With more breweries shutting down permanently, we won’t see the varied offer we’re used to. This is not necessarily bad, since craft brewers are going all in with their best beer.
Premiumization is the name of the game — fewer beers, better quality. Craft breweries all around the globe are pulling out their big guns with the most interesting and quality-oriented brews we’ve seen in some time.
3. MANY HAZY IPA'S COMING YOUR WAY
With a wider beer market, craft producers are bringing forward beer styles that are just easy to love by anyone, and for the category, nothing beats New England IPAs or Hazy IPAs.
If you think the fruity, cloudy beers are hot right now, wait for the category’s real boom in 2021. Craft breweries everywhere are experimenting with the style yielding delicious results.
4. LET’S WELCOME THE RISE OF SOUR BEERS
Along with Hazy IPAs, Sour beers are appealing for both beer connoisseurs and new beer drinkers. Lambic and Sour Beers, mostly inspired in Belgian styles, are over-performing common beer styles, and their popularity will continue to grow. If you like tangy beers, 2021 will be one good year for you, my friend.
5. ORDER YOUR BEER ONLINE
It’s easy to see online beer sales will keep on growing in 2021. At the end of the day, for many, it’s the only way to enjoy a cold one during the global pandemic.
Craft breweries that had already established online sales channels are doing better than ever, but the market is big enough for everyone. Today, all breweries are making good use of online sales.
6. CBD BEERS, FINALLY HITTING THE MAINSTREAM
CBD is the non-psychoactive compound in marijuana, and it has lots of alleged health benefits, including deep relaxation. We already saw wine and beers infused with the molecule, but 2021 might be the year we see the category climb up the ranks.
With an increasing acceptance for the green weed’s heath properties, the market is finally ready to see some commercial action in the category.
2020 was the year of hard seltzers, but it seems it was just the beginning. The low-alcoholic fizzy drinks have permeated down from the large players to craft breweries adding the easy-to-drink beverages to their catalog. The craft hard seltzer era has begun. Don’t blink or you’ll miss out on it!
